About the project (provided by the applicant)
The premiere of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida in a grand production by renowned Italian director Giancarlo del Monaco took place at the Mariinsky II in February 2025. Set designer — Antonio Romero, costume designer — Gabriela Salaverri, choreographer — Emil Faski. Giancarlo del Monaco’s production is notable for its scale and innovative technical solutions: the capabilities of the Mariinsky II allow for rapid changes in visual perspective, as well as the raising and lowering of different stage sections.
The production involves several hundred performers — soloists, a vast chorus, and supernumeraries — and around 400 costumes were created for the show. The historically accurate sets are made from materials resembling basalt and volcanic lava, with monumental 10-meter-high columns and statues dominating the stage. It is against this majestic backdrop that the story of the main characters unfolds.
