Hussam Chakouf joined Zaha Hadid Architects in 2006 as a junior architect and was promoted to Associate in 2012. He has participated in the design of numerous competition entries and projects such as the Elk Grove Civic Center Master Plan, California, USA, the Sofia Karo Multifunctional Masterplan in Bulgaria and the Business Bay — Signature Towers in Dubai.
Hussam has worked as Project Associate for various innovative architectural design competitions and built projects throughout Russia, China, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe.
In China, Hussam currently is the project architect of OPPO HQ project in Shenzhen which is at design development stage. Hussam led design competitions for the Chengdu History Museum and the masterplan for Chongqing Liangjang Collaborative Innovative Zone, a new district that will house a number of high-profile tech companies.
In Russia, these include competitions for a masterplan for the Rublyovo-Arkhangelskoye, the Sberbank Cultural Centre in Moscow, the Yekaterinburg Concert Hall, the embankment development of Novorossiysk, and maserplans Kuzminki and Tushino. He also managed façade construction documents for the Dominion Tower built in Moscow.
In the Middle East and North Africa, Hussam directed design for a number of high profile projects including new buildings for The People’s Assembly of Syria, and the Iraqi Council of Representatives in Baghdad. Hussam was the Project Architect for delivery of construction documents for the high-profile administrative complex of a North-African country.
In Europe, Hussam worked on the competition for the Karo masterplan in Sofia, Bulgaria, and construction administration for the Pierresvives.
Education & Teaching
Hussam studied architecture at the University of Damascus where he achieved his Bachelor in Architecture in 2004. He went on to study for his post graduate at the prestigious Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, where he received his Master degree in Housing and Urbanism in 2008.
