About the project
Monte Alentejano is a vernacular housing type from Alentejo.These houses have a simple saddle pitch roof an imposing chimney and sit as a long volume on the top of hill. Influenced by a desire to build an ecohouse as well as the constraints of working within a remote location it was designed to be selfsufficient generate its own electricity harvest the water the land had to offer and dispose of its own waste.The project consists of 2 volumes connected by pergola in a westfacing L shape around the pool.The house comprises a generous open-plan kitchen/dining/living and 3 bedrooms.The annex includes 2 bedrooms.Due to forest fire laws and the terrain the house ended up cantilevering off the hill which created a perception of a floating house.The house's temperature is regulated by the energy efficient building fabric paired with passive solar shading from roof overhangs to prevent overheating combined with active solarpanel system of underfloor heating and radiant cooling ceiling panels.
