Enroute Knowledge: Reading room in a park
Category
Best Design Project for Library
About the project
The city of Vadodara has a rich legacy of education and social reforms in the 19th century. It seems the culture of the city is very much shaped by its institutions; be it University, Town hall or a library. In continuation of this tradition a “Reading Room” is proposed right in the middle of Sayaji Baug, Vadodara, Gujarat, India. This peaceful location besides the bank of river Vishwamitri is considered ideal for book lovers, writers, poets, innovators and students to indulge themselves in the world of book and conversations.
The reading room has been designed with a no building typology. The built does not compete with the context as the park has numerous historical constructs belonging to various architectural styles. The proposal generates a subtle gesture on the ground where as the spaces are below the ground. Connections and linkages with the existing structures has been a major concern to make the scheme more contextual in nature in spite of a subterranean approach.
