About the project
Poveglia, a small desolate island near Venice, was used as residence, quarantine station and a
mental hospital until year 1968. Over 100,000 people died on the island since ages and were buried in plague pits. The cemetery designed on this island is not intended as a burial ground, rather a space to house cremation urns, akin to Modena cemetery by Aldo Rossi.
The COVID-19 pandemic inflicted psychological stress on all. The prolonged social isolation devoid of our connect with nature, intensified the stress felt. The gradual opening had us slowly repair and nurture our bond with the outside world. The metaphor of pandemic lockdown and the restrictions thereon, the concept of changing degrees of transparency and enclosure is recreated. The slow lifting of restrictions is denoted by the disintegrating structure, as we journey from a space of less transparency to a space of more transparency. The simultaneous takeover of the green reinforces connect with the nature, as the lockdown lifts.

Omya Sharma, pursuing Bachelor of Architecture from one of the premier institutes of architecture, CEPT University: «I’m in my final year (9th semester). My interest lies in fictional genre, contemporary arts, reading about the technical, Mars habitation. I’m also a Formula 1 enthusiast and Lewis Hamilton fan. My aim is to work on the futuristic technologies and new materials to build a sustainable a habitat.»
