About the project
Alexander Duma’s The Lady of the Camellias, which the public of the 19th century believed to be quite amoral, is a semi-autobiographical novel based on the author's love affair with courtesan Marie Duplessis. That must be why La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, based on this story, is still popular.
Its new interpretation by Nikolay Markelov is a manifesto of the dying beauty. The female beauty impersonated by Violetta conquers – and inevitably dies. The action on the stage isn’t connected to any specific time period.
‘You can not conceive in the midst of what gilded misery the poor thing is dying’, — Duma wrote, and this leitmotiv of excessive but destructive luxury and glamour runs through the entire performance as a golden thread.
