Project
Sofiyskaya Embankment of the Volkhov River
Category
Best Implemented Landscape Architecture Project
About the project
Before beautification, this part of the embankment was undeveloped, without any transport routes, walkways, or functional ties.
Starting from the recently established Waterman square garden, the embankment is located in the Nerevsky district — one of the oldest parts of the Middle Age Novgorod. In old times, 9 streets ended at the Volkhov River, and one of them crossed the today’s Waterman square. This is why one of the objectives of the project was preserving the memories and history of this place. For that, the stone pavement was utilized, and brass signs and information boards were installed, too.
The willow grove was left untouched at the river bank, where the pontoon pedestrian walkway was arranged. The dry music and light fountain has become very popular with the visitors.
