About the project
The Runaway Slave is a scenic vocal composition by the German composer Hans Werner Henze in 1969—1970.
As the musical part of this piece is quite sophisticated, the designer wanted to make the decoration set as minimalistic as possible. The dominant in her solution were the ropes that are used in different functions depending on the scene. For the designer, scenography is not just some background but a partner in action. The ropes will be a cage and sugarcane, and shackles, and whips, and century-old trees, and a cross, and even the foemen.
