John Quale, Chair and Professor of Architecture in the University of New Mexico School of Architecture + Planning has accepted the invitation to participate in 2020 Golden Trezzini Awards Jury. The School has become the Awards’ partner.

The main objective of the Golden Trezzini Awards is to acknowledge and promote architectural and designer projects which can be referred to as artwork in terms of artistic value. Professor Quale notes he was surprised to be asked to participate on the jury.

However, Mr. Quale has served on several notable juries during his academic career. Twice he has served on the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment (AIA-COTE) jury. He also served as a juror on the International Competition for Masdar Headquarters in 2008, for the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Masdar’s aspiration is to create a net-zero community in the desert. He also served on the MUD HOUSE Design Competition, organized by the NKA Foundation, Ghana in 2015.

John Quale has won over thirty awards in competitions, including first place in the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Design Competition while he was a graduate student. His design/build project, ecoMOD, has won a large number of awards, such as being selected by the UN World Habitat Award as a Finalist, the only U.S. Finalist that year. In 2013, when he was on the faculty of the University of Virginia, the ecoMOD Project was selected by Architect Magazine for their Research and Development Award.

His area of expertise is sustainable design and offsite (prefab) construction. He has published three books, Offsite Architecture: Constructing the Future, in partnership with Ryan E. Smith (Routledge); Sustainable, Affordable Prefab: the ecoMOD Project (UVA Press) and Trojan Goat (UVA Press) about his first experience running a design / build project. It was the first Solar Decathlon event in 2002. The student team included over 25 members from Architecture and Engineering.

The ecoMOD Project has transitioned to the University of New Mexico, and is currently working with Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity on ecoMOD7 AZUL.

Meanwhile, the School of Architecture and Planning has become a partner of the Golden Trezzini Awards. The School is an integral part of the University of New Mexico. The University has been educating architects since the early part of the twentieth century, and in 1936, the first architectural concentration was established within the College of Fine Arts.

Today, at the undergraduate level, the School currently offers two pre-professional degree programs, the Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (BAA) and the Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Planning and Design (BAEPD). The School offers the state's only professional, graduate degrees in these fields: Master of Architecture (M Arch), Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP), and Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA).

The Golden Trezzini Awards for Architecture and Design are established in 2018 and named after Domenico Trezzini (1670—1734), the first architect of St. Petersburg, born in Switzerland.
