Preservation and reboot of TP-RP 2820

TP-RP 2820 is the former transformer substation of the river port on the Nizhny Novgorod Strelka, built back in the 1930s when a river port was located on the territory.

In 2021, together with the activation of the Strelka, the Institute for the Development of the Urban Environment of Nizhny Novgorod Region created a concept for the revitalisation of the substation into a café. It is based on a combination of industrial and temple aesthetics as a reminder of the industrial heritage of the lost port on the Strelka, as well as a dedication to the icon-painting and restoration culture of Nizhny Novgorod Region. This is reflected in the interior and the design of the details. An example is the single “cells” in the former technical niches, the bench for communal meals, the large refectory table with the inlaid history of the Strelka, and the polyptych about the stages of icon painting.

In the course of the renewal the form of the building was carefully preserved, and posters and plaques found in the interior were used. All the furniture — wooden and metal — and the metal luminaires were made according to the individual authorial design of the architects of the Institute for the Development of the Urban Environment of Nizhny Novgorod Region.
