The design of Al-Shawaka Fish Market responds to the organic urban fabric and architectural heritage of Old Baghdad. Fragmented brick masses, arches, shaded passages, and wooden mashrabiya elements reinterpret traditional local architecture while providing natural ventilation and shade. A lightweight parametric roof, inspired by a fisherman’s net and the movement of fish in water, connects the market blocks and creates shaded public spaces. The contrast between the solid brick forms and the fluid roof expresses a balance between heritage and modernity, allowing the market to blend naturally with its historic surroundings.
