About the project (provided by the applicant)
The scenography of the ballet production “Queen of Spades” was created by artist Polina Bakhtina for the historical stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. The world premiere took place on December 14, 2023.
The basis of the performance is a story in which, alongside human characters and a ghost, the city of St. Petersburg itself practically becomes another character. The music was composed by the St. Petersburg composer Yuri Krasavin, commissioned by the Bolshoi Theatre, сhoreography is by Yuri Possokhov. The performance intertwines the plot twists of the literary source and the canonical opera libretto, especially since Yuri Krasavin wrote the music based on the work of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
Polina Bakhtina, working for the first time on a production at the Bolshoi Theatre, created an image of a majestic city full of mysteries and hidden threats, existing as if between the present and the past, between two worlds, one of which is a true mirage, and the other not entirely real. This was achieved through the sinister design of the tapestry, the giant mirror covered with the patina of time on the backdrop, the gilded frames receding into the depths of the stage and times, and the rising tulle curtains.
