Project
Battle on the Ice Diorama Museum: Architectural Concept
Nomination
Best Architectural Design for a Museum
About the project
Besides the battle itself, the authors were inspired with architecture of Novgorod and Pskov, traditional Rus engraved white stones, as well as breaks and iridescence of ice ridges. Snow-white smooth shapes with bass-reliefs, showing Novgorod and Vladimir warriors, collide with dark sharp edges.
The museum features a composition of contrasting volumes. Thus, three white blade-like waves can be interpreted as three rows of Russian warriors, with a block of German riders wedging into their formation like an enormous ice ridge. The diorama museum is to become a symbolic spot of military glory.
