Project “Botanical Garden in Ice,” Kindergarten Project
Best Project of Building or Facility by Student
About the project (provided by the applicant) The kindergarten, located in Yakutsk, is designed to ensure children’s comfort throughout the year, especially during the long winter.
To give children the feeling of being in their own little town, pairs of group units are placed in separate small buildings, which are connected into a single complex by a glazed atrium-greenhouse.
Other buildings support the idea of clear functional zoning, including administrative and technical facilities, a sports complex with a pool, a music room, and other classrooms for comprehensive child development.
The foundation of the kindergarten’s supplementary education consists of botanical lessons, which benefit from having an on-site greenhouse—an especially valuable feature in Yakutsk’s permafrost conditions.
The project’s form is inspired by the image of a balagan, a type of winter dwelling used by the Yakuts. It is a low structure made of slanted poles with a flat roof.
