Project
Bread, Espresso and Arashiyama Garden
Nomination
Best Implemented Project of Public Space
About the project
The former Kobayashi House and the surrounding old house were renovated into a cafe, Bread, Espresso and Arashiyama Garden, in Kyoto. We turned the Kobayashi House into cafe space and the other into a bakery and sales space. In addition, the garden between the two sites is designed for each to enjoy. Because the Kobayashi House is a cultural asset (Kyoto Tangible Cultural Property), there’re restrictions that wasn’t possible to make bread. So, by renovating the neighboring old house into a bakery and sales space, we created an environment in which the Kobayashi House could serve bread. The house is a 210-year-old with high and dim interior, and those making space attractive. In this renovation, we created a new white wall at a point, and irradiated light onto that wall to create soft light like an «ANDON» (traditional Japanese lighting). We have achieved an interior space with optimal illumination for dining spaces without compromising the original brightness of the building.
