The plot of Woody Allen's tragicomedy centers around a mob family led by a mobster nicknamed Duck Sal. When Raphael’s painting "Madonna Granduca" falls into his hands, the lives of all his relatives are transformed.
Artist Vladimir Firer juxtaposes the rich, ornate entourage of the mobster's home with the calm, luminous image of the great painting. In Sal’s house, everything is put on display: luxurious Dior-style outfits and antique items that do not always harmonize with one another. To complement this kitsch, the artist frames the portal with light bulbs like a cabaret, where everything is bright, without shades or half-tones.
The image of the Madonna and Child is projected onto a large screen that replaces the backdrops. The painting hovers freely in this space and changes size as the characters freeze before it, lost in their thoughts. It seems to respond to the movement of the soul, captivating the viewer. In the finale, the characters find themselves under gunfire, and the infant — "growing" to fill the entire screen — seemingly covers them, saving them. The painting becomes one of the main characters of the play and an essential driver of the action.
