Restoration of the Church of the Intercession on Borovaya Street

The Church of the Intercession on the former factory outskirts was built in 1897 according to the design of architect Nikolay Nikonov. Factory owners, workers and residents of the surrounding neighbourhoods donated for the construction of the church. The silhouette of the Church of the Intercession with its high bell tower became an expressive dominant in the perspective of Borovaya Street. The design of the church façades reflects the interaction of Byzantine architecture and the decorative forms of Moscow and Yaroslavl architecture of the 16th–17th centuries.

In the 1930s the church was closed. The bell tower was completely dismantled and the domes were demolished. Industrial workshops were housed in the former church. The building stood mutilated until the beginning of the 21st century.

Large-scale works for the restoration of the object of federal significance “Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos” continued for nine years. The restoration was carried out under the KGIOP programme at the expense of the budget of St. Petersburg. In the course of the works the emergency condition was eliminated, the five-domed completion and the bell tower were recreated. The rich finishing of the façades with polychrome majolica tiles was restored.
