Dormitory building for students of the Boris Eifman Dance Academy

The dormitory building for students of the Boris Eifman Dance Academy has been designed on the Petrograd Side at the intersection of Liza Chaikina Street and Bolshaya Pushkarskaya Street, in place of a lacuna that appeared during the Soviet period. The gallery block with residential modules is set back from the “red line” of Liza Chaikina Street in order to preserve the tall greenery and the previously existing effect of sparsity and pulsation of the environment (“memory of place”). The block of rehearsal halls is formed along the “red line” of Bolshaya Pushkarskaya Street, closing the massive firewall of the adjoining historic building. The façades of the dormitory are clad in clinker brick of two colours — light beige and red-brick — which corresponds to the materials and colour palette of the surrounding development. The “free” pattern of the façades with window openings and piers of varying sizes reflects the planning structure of the building, while the scale and proportions of the details are correlated with the historic surroundings.
