Project
Dostoevsky Literature Memorial Museum Expansion Concept
Nomination
Best Museum Architectural Design
About the project
The expansion concept for the Dostoevsky Museum implies construction of a new public cultural space close to the existing memorial site.
The new building will be designed to ensure fully-featured museum operation in compliance with modern requirements. It will comprise an entrance lobby, a lecture and a audience venues, an exhibition space, a café, and a museum store.
In terms of materials and scale the building will match the surrounding historical development. Finished with natural stone, its facades will symbolize classicality, and its minimalistic decorations will refer to how essential the writer’s works are today. A vertical atrium will connect the old and the new building – there will be an entrance there.
The project provides for the appearance of the new building to refer to the diversified and dramatic atmosphere of Dostoevsky’s books, as well as the spirits of his characters. The design concept offers contrasts of modern and historical elements, of front streets and well-yards, a game of light and shadow.
