About the project (provided by the applicant)
Eshraq House (from the Persian word Eshraq, meaning «light» or «spiritual illumination») is a prototype for a residential community in Shiraz, designed for individuals engaged in culture, art, and literature. Inspired by the city’s rich artistic and philosophical legacy, the project blends traditional heritage with contemporary needs, creating a space that nurtures both creativity and intellectual exchange.
The house integrates functional spaces for work, study, and gatherings while redefining the traditional courtyard. Instead of a central role, courtyards take on a symbolic presence, framing elements like an illuminated orange tree and a cypress—references to Shiraz’s historical gardens and literary heritage. This interplay of nature, light, and architecture fosters an atmosphere where past and present merge seamlessly, offering an inspiring retreat for artists, writers, and thinkers.
