In connection with the anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod, a decision was taken to recreate the funicular on the Kremlin slope, lost in the 20th century, which once carried passengers from the city square to the heart of the fortress. The newly rebuilt funicular consists of upper and lower stations, as well as an inclined track with an electric passenger car.
The upper station of the funicular is designed in contemporary forms with extensive glazing, timber louvres, and brick walls, such that the "brick" facade flows smoothly into the "brick" interior. The materials (brick, glass, and wood) have been selected to harmonise with the materials of the Kremlin walls surrounding the station. The architecture is low-slung, with accents of sharp angles that lend dynamism of form to the horizontally oriented structure.
In the waiting hall, the foundations of the water tower of the lost funicular have been museified.
