Project
Gandhi Hall — Conservation and Revitalization
Category
Best Implemented Restoration / Reconstruction Project
About the project
Gandhi Hall has a very important place in the historical and social cultural weave of the city of Indore in central India.
Rising damp in the walls, cracks in the stone masonry, rotting woodwork in ceiling and stage are among a few of the issues that had cropped up over years of rough usage.
Starting with a thorough condition mapping, integrating methods to strengthen the deteriorating structural members where needed. Whole North wall which was decaying was jacked-up and new brickwork under lintel level was done. Vegetation growing out of structure were uprooted and torn apart walls were anchored. A plinth protection all around the building was added after exhuming a part of plinth to prevent damp rising from the ground. Restoration of the decorative elements like stone carving, woodwork, etc. helped to restore the magnificence of the building.
The defunct Clock tower was restored to make the Clock-tower bells ring in memories of a beautiful era for the building.
