Project Green Cape in the Historic Center of St. Petersburg
Category Best Student Project of Public Space
About the project (provided by the applicant) The project involves the landscaping of a park on Smolnaya Embankment, developed with consideration for the historical, architectural, and natural surroundings. The park is integrated into the Neva River’s waterfront, featuring open viewpoints over the river. Stepped descents visually connect the area with the water. The industrial-historical character of the embankment (proximity to the Main Waterworks Station) is emphasized through design elements, such as industrial-style street lamps and informational stands about the city’s water infrastructure.
Buffer zones with quiet greenery are created along the park’s perimeter to soften the boundary between the public space and surrounding residential buildings. Entry areas from the neighborhood serve as meeting points, while rock gardens at the entrances symbolize a transition from the urban environment into nature. Existing trees are preserved, and new plantings are selected with St. Petersburg’s climate and authentic appearance in mind (linden, maple, shrubs).
