Project
Zoo on Kotlin Island
Nomination
Best Student’s Project of Public Space
About the Project
The new zoo will occupy a plot of about 220 hectares in the western part of Kotlin. The area has a number of features that had to be taken into account. First, there are cultural heritage sites of the late 19th– early 20thcenturies to be integrated into the environment. Second, the territory is flooded on a seasonal basis, as well as exposed to strong winds from the Gulf of Finland, which necessitates creation of a rampart reminiscent of Kronstadt’s fortifications. Finally, the area is home to rare plant and bird species. Therefore, the most important task is to protect the natural biotope plus bring in free roaming animals. The zoo grounds are divided into two parts: regular – the visitor service area, and landscape – the exhibition area divided into sections in accordance with the zoogeographic principle.
