The familiar story of Katerina Izmailova, who commits horrific crimes under the influence of unrestrained passion, was created by Leskov not simply to thrill the reader. He explores the very nature of the desires that arise in a young woman and prove destructive both to herself and to those around her.
The authors of the production, playwright Yaroslavа Pulinovich and director Egor Chernyshov, have followed the same path of inquiry. It is not Katerina’s crime itself that becomes the focus of the action, but the awakening within her of an inhuman rebellion against the life imposed upon her, from which there is ultimately only one way out. And her only hope of salvation through love turns into an even greater deception.
The set design by Maria Lukka and music by Sergey Ushakov support the director’s vision, creating at once a world of chthonic darkness and hope for the salvation of the soul. Once again, the theatre poses questions before the audience that have occupied the human mind for centuries: questions of faith and forgiveness, of whether love and passion can be justified, and, ultimately, who is to blame?
