The Museum of the Black Land (sawad is Arabic for 'blackness') is a 50,000 sq.m museum located in Baghdad, Iraq, next to the Monument to the Unknown Soldier. "The Black Land" refers to the fertile dark soil of Mesopotamia, connecting the museum to the land as the cradle of civilization.
The concept envisions the land rising from beneath the earth, forming monumental masses inspired by the layered structure of cuneiform clay tablets. The architecture becomes an extension of the ground, as if buried history is emerging into the present. A central atrium forms the heart of the museum, while the Great Sumerian Staircase, inspired by the ziggurat, connects the exhibition spaces and creates a journey through descent, discovery, and emergence. The museum becomes a symbol of Mesopotamian history rising from the earth.
Unknown Solider monument, Baghdad, Iraq
I am a fourth‑year architecture student at the University of Technology in Baghdad, Iraq. My approach to architecture explores the relationship between cultural identity, history, and contemporary design. Through my academic work, I strive to develop innovative concepts that bridge Iraq’s heritage with new spatial and structural ideas.
