About the project (provided by the applicant)
The design of the memorial is based on historical maps of besieged Leningrad, giving it special significance and creating a unique visual experience. This choice symbolizes a connection to key events of the past and helps visitors understand and feel the historical importance of the memorial.
A ground-level illuminated line highlights the boundary of the site, enhancing the ring-shaped contour effect. The form of the memorial is a sharp-angled structure symbolizing the danger that came from the enemy. The monument’s shape was designed to preserve open views of nearby memorials and maintain existing pedestrian routes. In addition, granite blocks are placed throughout the area. Special attention was given to the interior space: candles placed in rectangular niches form a belt-like ribbon along the perimeter of the memorial. At the center stands a granite obelisk inscribed with the words «To the Residents of Besieged Leningrad» on its side, crowned by a skylight.
