The Mikhailovsky (St. Michael's) Castle is an outstanding architectural monument of the late 18th century and the enigmatic residence of Emperor Paul I. The lighting concept reveals the plasticity of the building while preserving its historical image. Three of the facades are illuminated by floodlights mounted on poles within the garden, while the southern facade is lit by fixtures housed within the canal niches and on the supports of Zamkovaya Street. Columns, the pediment, and sculptures are highlighted with luminous accents; the dome, spire, cross, and flag are illuminated from the roof, utilizing narrow 2° beam spotlights.
A special feature of the project is the octagonal courtyard. Fifty DMX floodlights illuminate its facades, sculptures, and the monument to Paul I. A dynamic lighting scenario creates a mystical atmosphere: the figure of the emperor smoothly emerges from the darkness, while sequentially revealing sculptures sustain the legend of the ghost of Paul I. The scene is visible from the street through the castle gates. Over 400 LED luminaires were installed without compromising the historical structures.
The project was implemented as part of the collaboration between Gazprom PJSC and the Government of Saint Petersburg, with the participation of the "Nevsky Svet" association.
