The ensemble of the Makaryev Yellow Water Monastery on the Volga is a unique historical and architectural complex inextricably bound to the Volga landscape. Founded by Saint Macarius around 1434–1435, the monastery stands as one of the oldest monastic complexes in the Nizhny Novgorod Volga region. A prominent chapter in its history was the Makaryev Fair, which operated beside the monastery walls until 1816 before its relocation to Nizhny Novgorod.
The architectural lighting concept was developed with careful consideration of the historical and natural environment, as well as key distant vantage points: from the west (from the village of Valki), the south (approaching by ferry from Lyskovo), and the east (from the Volga River and the village of Isady). The illumination of the western, eastern, and southern fortress walls, the Gate Church, residential quarters, the Church of the Dormition with its bell tower, the Trinity Cathedral, and the Church of St. Macarius highlights the ensemble's silhouette and architectural hierarchy while preserving the integrity of its historic appearance.
