About the project (provided by the applicant) Marriage, or The Last Point of Solitude is a play directed by Andrey Prikotenko, based on N.V. Gogol’s “Marriage.” The set and costume designer is Olga Shaishmelashvili.
The action is relocated to contemporary Saint Petersburg. The main character, Gafa, is the owner of a salon renting wedding dresses and tailoring men’s suits, who is unlucky in love. Her lively and resourceful colleague, Fekla, more successful in matters of marriage, tries to help her friend find personal happiness. Among the men who visit the salon to have the perfect suit made, each one becomes a “groom” in turn.
On stage, mannequins in wedding dresses and suits are arranged: at the beginning, they are covered with plastic sheets reminiscent of clouds of fog, and by the finale, they are tightly wrapped again along with the characters, likening living people to dolls. The overhead space is framed with costume patterns, which in the finale descend into the “abyss of modern human solitude.”
