Project: Memorial to those who perished in the Ladoga Lake
Category: Best Project of Building or Facility by Student
About the project (provided by the applicant): The memorial is a mound cut with two concrete slabs with a hall venue inside. In fact, a mound is an archetypical burial place both in Russian and European culture. Located within the water buffer zone of the Ladoga lake, it is shaped as a circle, which seems most relevant.
Concrete slabs with a narrow path between them are a symbol of the Road of Life entrapped by German and Finnish troops on both sides. The space between the slabs is covered with a transparent roof that can be walked over. This is a metaphor of ice above the water.
