Project
Memorial to Moscow Sky Defenders

Nomination
Best Student’s Project of Public Space

About the project
The memorial project is a part of the Master’s thesis on beautification of the West Birulyovo District, known for its crime rates and national unrest. The proposed facility isn’t just a public space, but a symbol, referring to commemorative memories of the Great Patriotic War, shared by most of nationalities. The monument is designed as a wall, lowering over a shell crater and separating it in two sections: the first one is a curved mirror, in which visitors see peaceful sky, regardless of their point of view. The second part features an amphitheater, which continues into a marble pool with quiet water surface. Above the wall, visitors see nothing but sky that they also see in the crater, visually landing at the edge of material and immaterial.

The wall is made of bricks with names of the aggrieved (black burnt brick), injured (dark brick), and defense survivors.
