Project:
Monument to the liquidators of the Chernobyl disaster

Best Art in Outdoor Public Space
About the project (provided by the applicant):
The monument is dedicated to the liquidators of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, one of the most significant man-made catastrophes of the 20th century.
The human figures are depicted entering the affected area, gradually dissolving and disappearing in it. The «zone» is represented abstractly, while the figures look realistic. The first figure, being still fully “here”, is three-dimensional. As the figures move deeper into the radiation-affected area, they become flatter: the second figure appears as a wide relief, the third as a thinner relief, and the fourth transitions into a counter-relief and eventually a mere silhouette. No faces or exposed body parts are visible. One of the figures is shown deformed by an enveloping, destructive force, symbolizing radiation.
Crafted from bronze with a patina finish, the sculpture is mounted on a small elevation made of fractured granite. The vanishing figures embody the self-sacrifice of the liquidators – eternity captured in a single moment.
