Category Best Implemented Capital Construction Project in St. Petersburg
About the project (provided by the applicant) The appearance of a residential complex on the former Petmol factory site is a striking example of converting an industrial area into a residential one and integrating new architecture into the historic urban fabric. The footprint of the new construction is surrounded on three sides by the Skotoprigonny Yard buildings (1823–1826, architect I. I. Charlemagne the First), which are recognized as federally significant cultural heritage.
Although set back from the historic buildings by the required distance, the new construction remains within the perimeter of the heritage site. Architect-Classicist Charlemagne designed the Skotoprigonny Yard based on the Roman military camp (castrum) with its intersecting main streets. Considering this ideal and highly rational layout as a “virtual object of protection,” the architects of Studio 44 reproduced the orthogonal structure of the heritage site in the new building. As a result, the architecture of the new buildings inherited the genetic code of their predecessors — both the Empire style of the 1820s and the Empire style of the 1950s.
