The main building of Moscow State University, located on the Lenin Hills in Moscow, is the most striking example of Soviet-period architecture, built in 1949–1953 according to the joint design of architects L. Rudnev, S. Chernyshev and P. Abrosimov. The sculptural decoration of the façades was executed by the workshop of V. Mukhina. The MSU building is the tallest (235 metres) of the seven realised high-rises of the capital and until the 1990s retained the status of the tallest building in Europe.
Since its construction the building has not undergone major reconstructions. Before the start of the development of the restoration project some structural and many finishing materials had serious physical wear. The complex and rich décor of 62 fragments of the façades in natural stone and ceramics required urgent restoration intervention.
In a short time the specialists of “ASM Group” developed a project for the restoration of the building’s façades, including the monumental sculptures and the unique spire with a star and wreath of glass. The restoration works were carried out in 2025–2026.
