Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts Lausanne

Best Architectural Design for a Museum
About the project
In 2011 Barozzi Veiga won the international competition for the definition of a masterplan for the new Art District of Lausanne –Platform 10 – centred around the city’s three main art institutions: the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, the Musée de l’Elysée and the Musée de Design d’Arts appliqués Contemporains. All this activity had to be sited within a complex urban setting, affected by old railway yards currently in a state of disuse.
From 2011 to 2019 the office designed and built the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts Lausanne, which currently houses over ten thousand works of art in its collection, covering the visual arts in general as well as special holdings of works by artists with connections to the Canton de Vaud.
The building, a monolithic volume, parallel to the railway, echoes the industrial past of the area and the defines a continuous public space where architecture becomes the frame of the urban life and the container of the new public art centre of Lausanne.
