“Northern Sun” is a joint exhibition project of the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Reserve and the Kargopol Historical-Architectural and Art Museum (Arkhangelsk Region), presented at three venues: the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Reserve, the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum, and the State Museum Association “Artistic Culture of the Russian North” (Arkhangelsk Region).
“Northern Sun” is an immersion into the world of gold embroidery, carefully preserved in the Russian North. The exhibition is built upon a unique dialogue between two worlds: the refined brilliance of the imperial workshops (the collection of uniforms and dresses from the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Reserve) and the distinctive, profound beauty of peasant needlework (headdresses and shawls from the Kargopol Museum).
The central image of the exhibition is a river of time, along which a boat sails. It binds eras and cities, members of high society and the craftswomen of the Russian North with a golden thread.

The Tsarskoye Selo Museum-Reserve is a unique monument of world history and culture. The former summer residence of the Russian emperors is a recognised masterpiece of architecture and landscape art of the 18th – early 20th centuries. The compositional centre of the palace-and-park ensemble is the Catherine Palace — a magnificent example of the Baroque. The Golden Enfilade of ceremonial halls, among which is the world-famous Amber Room, astonishes with the luxury of its decoration.
