Restoration and Adaptation of the Regional Cultural Heritage Site “Novo-Slobodskaya Mosque”, 1801–1805 (Russia)

Project
Restoration and Adaptation of the Regional Cultural Heritage Site “Novo-Slobodskaya Mosque”, 1801–1805

Best Implemented Russian Project for the Restoration of a Religious Building

About the project (provided by the applicant)

The building’s layout corresponds to classic Tatar mosques: two prayer halls on the second floor, a staircase in the northern part, and utility rooms on the first floor. Wooden service buildings were located on the north and east sides of the mosque.

During restoration works, later additions were dismantled, and the minaret, historical two-hall layout, and two-flight staircase were restored. The restored historical appearance emphasizes the mosque’s historical, cultural, and religious significance. Temporary structures necessary for the functioning of the religious site and ablution facilities were also arranged. Interiors — stucco, stained glass, tiles, carpets — were made according to historical analogs using traditional Tatar ornaments.
