Opus 48. Ostrovsky

Director Alexander Karpushin’s original stage fantasy, based on numerous works by Alexander Ostrovsky.

A provincial town on the Volga becomes a metaphor for its inhabitants’ internal state. At the heart of the scenography is an old carousel with a patina finish—a mere reminder that life once thrived here. Its rotation creates an illusion of movement within this frozen world. The characters exist as if in a closed loop: they change positions, yet essentially remain within the bounds of a single perception. Flanked by an amphitheater and a transforming "shell" bandstand, the setting establishes a tone of theatrical convention, where the boundary between performance and life dissolves.
