POPPY Roastery
Located in Nagoya’s historic Shikemichi district, POPPY Roastery inherits the city's postwar kissaten culture. Reimagining historic coffee guilds, this compact wholesale hub custom-blends beans for the region, acting as a democratic public anchor.
The spatial narrative creates a poetic transition from the historic street to inner stillness. Stepping onto the deep indigo Wilton carpet after removing one’s shoes triggers a silent ritual of boundary-crossing. Within the 2.17m-high timber structure, a mirrored aluminum ceiling expands perception, functioning like a still water basin that quietly captures and reflects steam, human presence, and passing time in serene silence.
The design celebrates radical craftsmanship: custom oil-treated carbonized cork, fire-evoking iron, and binchotan charcoal paint that absorbs light. By framing the industrial act of roasting directly at the street interface, the architecture links local memory with public life.

About the Applicant
Takuro Nakaya is a Japanese interior and spatial designer based in Nagoya. His practice focuses on poetic, context-sensitive designs that reflect local culture and materials. Having received multiple prestigious international recognitions—including the iF Design Award, Taipei Design Award, and Asia Design Prize—he continues to explore the profound intersection of tradition and contemporary aesthetics.
