Regional Science Centre at Rajkot

Best Implemented Project of Public Building or Facility
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The Rajkot Regional Science Centre’s design ingeniously integrates the built form with the landscape, rooted in local context & Hindu philosophy. Its brutalist architecture embodies a paradox that captivates & intrigues. Inspired by the annual religious fair, the design evolved from a square block into a circle, symbolizing continuum of life. At its heart lies a sacred central space embodying SHUNYA, the void of pure potential from which all creation emanates. This void unifies the project, with segments symbolizing ANANT, or the boundless. The central plaza, crowned by a tensile fabric, transforms into a celestial canopy where sunlight creates cosmic-like patterns. Radially projected stone masonry walls form a multifaceted pyramid-like structure, alternating between built & unbuilt, creating courts for open-air exhibits & contemplation. A deliberate emphasis on sustainability & green practices serves as a compelling model, contributing to the state’s net zero emission goals.
