Repurposing a gasholder into a library

Category

Best Design Project for Library

About the project (provided by the applicant)

Many historical buildings in Saint Petersburg have been rebuilt and restored to breathe new life into them. It is important to revitalize abandoned old structures by adapting them to new functions while preserving their unique style and historical significance. This way they can become vibrant cultural venues for local residents.

The project involves the transformation of a former gasholder into a modern library, with the goal of preserving and repurposing it to serve a new function. The designer’s concept for the gasholder’s interior is “East meets West,” which blends the building’s historical style with Chinese elements. The interior is organized across three floors and features a combination of traditional materials to create a space that is both interesting and functional.
