Project:
Revitalizing Irkutsk's Historic Quarters
Category:
Best Design of Public Space by Student
About the project (provided by the applicant):
The viaduct, a symbol of the 21st century, serves as the central element in the spatial organization of the block, standing in sharp contrast to the surrounding 19th and 20th-century buildings. While pedestrian flows are drawn towards the viaduct, the true vertical accents remain on Karl Marx Street. Deeper into the block, the influence of modernity diminishes, giving way to traditional historical buildings. This creates a harmonious blend of old and new, forming an engaging, functional space for people.
A key aspect of the transformation involves merging two blocks along Babushkina Street, a move rooted in the area's original historical layout when these blocks formed a single entity. This design approach revitalizes the northeastern part of the district, infusing it with new energy for regeneration.
