Memory Park as a New Form of Ritual Space

Today, a cemetery is a closed-off territory, disconnected from the urban fabric, with a marginal appearance and unrealized sacred potential. Cemetery grounds could become comfortable urban spaces that help people navigate difficult times, reconnect with themselves and those around them, and find solace and peace.

The use of the cemetery-park concept combined with innovative technologies in the field of funeral services offers a new perspective on such spaces. The main idea of the cemetery-park is to combine two key functions: recreational and ritual. The ritual function serves as the core that shapes the territory, while the recreational function emphasizes the sacred nature of the place, creates an atmosphere of seclusion and tranquility, and forms a dignified setting for the final resting place. The defining feature of the cemetery-park is the use of eco-burials, which makes it possible to increase the area and diversity of green spaces, ultimately shaping the park itself.
