Project 4* Medvezhiy Ugol Sanatorium and Resort Complex
Best Project of Public Building or Facility
About the project (provided by the applicant) The project is a nine-story chalet consisting of four sections with a two-level terraced underground parking connecting all blocks. The design is based on the traditional chalet style typical for mountain regions, featuring gable roofs, spacious balconies, and wide eaves.
The layout concept creates spatial morphotypes reminiscent of local gorges and valleys: recreational and public areas — small “valleys” and “gorges” — are located near and between the buildings. The plan accommodates a park zone, spaces for fairs and events, amphitheaters, and an open aquathermal area with a heated pool. This arrangement preserves a sense of intimacy and seclusion among the mountains while emphasizing unity with nature.
To highlight the scale and soften the height of the nine-story complex, the building volumes are visually divided into two parts: a monumental stone base and lighter upper levels with open balconies and glass railings.
