Restoration of 12th century Church of St. George, site of cultural heritage of federal significance
The Church of St. George in Staraya Ladoga is a pre-Mongol monument belonging to the "Ladoga period" of the 12th-century Novgorod school of architecture. The church is a site of federal significance and is famous not only for its architecture but also for its unique frescoes created by Greek and Russian masters.
Reconstructions of the church throughout history altered it beyond recognition. Restoration work began only in the 20th century, taking place in the 1900s, 1920s, 1950s, and 1990s. It was during this time that many of the church's original architectural forms were restored.
The restoration of the church facades, carried out in 2024–2025, returned the shrine to its original appearance and ensured the preservation of the ancient interior frescoes. In line with restoration techniques, the lime plaster was replaced, engineering measures were undertaken to reinforce the northern wall of the church, and the wall masonry, window frames, and doors were restored. Parts of the copper roof were replaced, and the cross was repaired.

About the Applicant
The "Staraya Ladoga Historical, Architectural, and Archaeological Museum-Reserve" was established on the basis of the Staraya Ladoga Local History Museum, as well as historical and cultural monuments of the village of Staraya Ladoga (Decree of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR No. 999-r dated July 25, 1984, and Decision of the Leningrad Regional Executive Committee No. 392 dated September 16, 1985) with the aim of preserving the complex of monuments and the historical environment, studying, and popularizing national heritage. It includes more than 130 monuments of history, architecture, and monumental painting.
