About the project (provided by the applicant)
The site, colloquially called Glass Town, is located in the eastern part of the city, on the left bank of the Neva River, south of the Obvodny Canal. Its history dates back to the late 18th century when Prince Potemkin relocated the glass and mirror factories granted to him by Catherine II to his country estate, situated behind the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. Today, however, Glass Town is merely one of the troubled areas within the city's «gray belt.»
The project aims to initiate the revitalization of this territory by establishing a new center of cultural, public and business activity. The design of the center draws inspiration from the glassmaking process, where molten materials are cooled to form solid glass. The white buildings, reminiscent of quartz, converge around a «red-hot» atrium, which is set to become the creative and artistic «boiling point» of the center.
