“Stroganov” club house is an example of contemporary architecture in the historic centre of Perm, where the principal challenge was not the reproduction of traditional development, but the search for a contemporary solution capable of entering into dialogue with it. The R1 project continues the character of Permskaya Street, formed by two-storey brick houses of the 19th century. Brick is chosen not only as a finishing material, but also as a means of architectural continuity: its texture, scale and colour link the new complex with the historic environment without direct stylisation. The street front is formed by a two-storey volume in strict accordance with the urban-planning regulations. The pitched roof and terrace additionally reduce the perceived scale of the building and support the silhouette of the existing development. Residential sections of larger scale are placed in the depth of the site, preserving visual and spatial distance from the historic street. The key principle of the project is the delicate continuation of context through material, scale and plasticity.
