Cultural heritage site of regional significance “Department Store of the Trading House ‘Sukhov and Sons’” (1880)

The realization of the restoration project for part of the surviving estate of the Barnaul merchant family Sukhovs is a historic event for the city. The Sukhov merchants were known in Barnaul from the 19th century as major entrepreneurs, property owners, and patrons of the arts. In the 1860s–1880s the head of the family was Nikifor Trofimovich Sukhov, a first-guild merchant.

In the course of the project it proved possible to recreate the main two-storey building almost in its original form and to successfully adapt it for a restaurant and spaces for city-wide festive events. Damaged by a destructive fire in 2000, the building rose like a phoenix after 25 years of oblivion. The estate occupies part of the block between L. Tolstoy Street, Sotsialistichesky Avenue, and M. Tobolskaya Street in the very heart of the historic centre of the city. During the restoration the original brickwork, wrought-iron elements, and Monier brick vaults were carefully preserved. On the western side, after cleaning, the famous cast-iron lions were returned to their places on the brick fence.
