Project
Museum of Andrey Tarkovsky

Nomination
Best Museum Architectural Design

About the project
The building volume seems to enclose the pedestrian zone, making it a part of a museum that no one will be able to pass by indifferently.

Both on the outside and the interiors the designer tried to reflect specifics of Tarkovsky’s work, and to repeat the atmosphere of his films. One of the tasks was to transform words, symbols and images into a single architectural shape.

The composition comprises four main parts, some of them steadily resting on the ground, and some of them floating above it. The first one is a captured natural space that is related to the rest of the museum parts by means of colonnades. The other is an entrance hall, featuring minor shapes inscribed into one another, with multiple stairs both inside and outside, leading to nowhere and referring to transcendence. The third part is a less sophisticated volume that houses key spaces, and the forth part is the high point of the museum (with a movie theater, too), its front façade facing the water pool and referring to eternity.
